5 Tips for Buying Baby’s First Shoes

When should you buy your baby’s first shoes? Your baby needs shoes when they begin standing and/or start walking. Many experts agree that barefoot is the best shoe. However, it is not always practical or safe to let your baby walk barefoot, especially outside. Children need shoes to keep them warm and protected. Use the following tips to find the perfect shoes:

• Proper fit. Your baby needs “wiggle room” or just enough room for the foot to be relaxed and to expand fully, as babies “grab” the ground with their toes to maintain balance. Shoes that are too big may cause them to fall or stumble because they cannot lift their feet high enough at first to clear the ground. If shoes are too small, they may be painful for the child and hard to get on. Your baby will not want to walk in them.
• Get help checking the fit. Many shoe stores offers a fit checking service. Have them check the fit for you and to explain what you should watch for as the baby grows. Check the fit often. Toddlers should be measured every 2 ½ - 3 months. Most will have grown ½ size in that time.
• What type of shoes are best? Shoes should be age appropriate. Walking develops in stages. There are shoes for each stage of mobility. Fashion statements are not always the best choice. Climate and foot shape are important to consider. No-slip soles are perfect for letting babies walk on slippery surfaces like hardwood floors with safety.
• When baby is walking well enough, pay close attention to the feet while walking:  Does the child toe in or out? Do the ankles roll inward or outward? The proper fit and style may aid the baby’s gait, balance, and posture thereby fostering the development of a more healthy foot.
• Avoid shopping when your baby is tired or hungry. Bring a snack, toy or book to keep them happy so their fitting will be more enjoyable for both of you.
